About The Godfoe Universe: APOLLYON 20XX:
A powerful group of elites known as The Order have manipulated world events for centuries from the shadows. Now, in the near future, this Order has created GOD, a machine capable of influencing the minds of the world’s population, one on the cusp of global domination. However, for GOD to be operational, a bond with a human host is needed. The recent discovery of an incredible new element, “Imperimetal,” has provided the means of merging man and machine.
Experiments with Imperimetal have produced Augments, individuals with incredible and unpredictable powers. Among them is a man known only as Xero, the prime candidate for the GOD project. However, he has escaped The Order and rallied with him a small band of young, like-minded Augments. Together, they seek to end The Order before GOD can be completed and the world brought to its knees.
What makes comics a legitimate form of art for you?
It’s funny we still have this debate. Humans have been using pictures and text to tell stories since pre-history. Maybe they’re not carved in stone but comics show us an ideal, more so than even novels. There are a million different ways people can imagine Atticus Finch but every single person recognizes Superman. We tend to trivialize the simple and the visceral but those things that spark that childlike awe in us are what stay with us.
What comics brought you into this field the most?
Matt Wagner’s Grendel is the single most influential comic to me. “Devil by the Deed” blew my mind. As someone who lacks the talent to draw comics, I wasn’t sure I could even write them until I saw what Matt did as far as storytelling. He had this incredible mix of almost pulp-noir writing that carried the work even more so than Frank Miller’s Daredevil. His art is also insanely good.
Tell us more about GODFOE!
The GODFOE Universe is a multi-genre story, spanning multiple millennia, broken into different Eras. Each Era tells the story of an individual branded as GODFOE. A Godfoe is someone who has rebelled against GOD, the dominant presence on Earth since time immemorial in our Universe.
Why did you choose Legacy Comix?
The (co) owner, Patrick Hickey Jr., shares our vision for creating comics free from convention and to blaze a new path forward much like Image did in the ’90s. The future of comics is indie comics. The future of indie comics is Legacy.
What’s your favorite Legacy comic? Why?
I’m very interested in seeing where Kroom goes. It’s an intriguing premise and the art reminds me of early 90’s DC which I loved.
What do you think you add to the Legacy lineup?
I like to think we bring a bit of fire and urgency. Our universe is massive and completely planned out. Josh finishes art at an unbelievable speed and we have stories lined up for literal decades. The guys at Iconic Comics have set the pace for output and we stand to match or even pass it. Legacy has a great roster and we look forward to learning from everyone.
What are your goals for GODFOE?
To inspire, plain and simple. Comics are in a dark place right now, particularly mainstream comics. We want people to feel what we felt when we picked up our favorite comics as kids. On the practical side, we want to expand out into multiple comics series (we already have a second one releasing Fall 2023), novels, video games, card games, and music. To infinity and beyond. You only live once.
What’s next?
The sky’s the limit. We have a finished novel set in the final Era that will lead to about 5 more books, multiple comics, some podcasts. Whatever we feel inspired to do. We will provide our fans with continuous work, they can bank on that.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I’ve probably said too much already.
